David Dobrik – the Most Famous DACA Recipient?
David Dobrik is arguably one of the most famous people on the planet.
He is also a DACA recipient.
Dobrik’s vlogs and Youtube videos have garnered over 5 billion views- that’s about 2/3 of the Earth’s population. His silly antics, comedy, and unreserved sincerity have gained him a huge following of fans across all types of political spectrums, cultures, and economic classes. Dobrik became famous through the looping video app Vine, and transitioned to Youtube prior to Vine ending. At just 23 years old, Dobrik is a multi-millionaire through his popular vlogs.
With such a large population of fans, Dobrik has largely shied away from politics. He has said that he has friends on both sides of the political spectrum and he isn’t very interested in politics. So it was extra shocking for people when on September 5, 2017 Dobrik announced through Twitter that he was a DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipient. His tweet stated:
“I paid $400,000 in taxes last year and all I got was a free trip back to Slovakia. #DefendDACA”
Unlike many DACA recipients, Dobrik did not know about his immigration status until he tried to get a driver’s license at 16 and found out that he didn’t have a social security number. Dobrik’s parents came to the United States from Slovakia with Dobrik when he was very young, and he had always grown up thinking he was a citizen.
Dobrik has not stated much more about his DACA status, aside from an episode of his podcast, VIEWS (dated 09/07/2017), to clarify some misconceptions about DACA. He said when he tweeted that he was a DACA recipient, people tweeted back at him that if he had so much money he could just buy his citizenship. Although he has largely chosen to stay out of political discussions since then, Dobrik wanted people to understand the process that DACA recipients go through, that citizenship cannot be bought, and that DACA recipients are people whose only home is the United States.
While we are not encouraging people to advertise their immigration status, Dobrik’s choice to reveal his immigration status shines a light on some of the misconceptions people have about DACA.
